Web view that stays the same

Does anybody know of a way, plugin, or anything else that can make what is a web viewer remain even if the site is not live anymore? I know this may be asking a lot because a web viewer’s job is to keep things live and reload the current site. However I did not want to assume no, and miss out on any know solutions for what I want. So that is what I want, a way to keep what is loaded into a web viewer always after it loads the first time. Firefox the browser can do this with the addon Scrapbook. This addon can take something like you view of a bank account, this being a type of view that you have login to see. It can take views like that and make them stay as web pages after you log off. They are not live anymore but you can always see an exact view of what it was. I don’t mind the suggestions of other ways to do this, or something like it. I am sure I am not the first developer that needs this. Thanks

Update Reference

Is this still the recommended way to update a database when it has been moved to a new location? I have used this method with a moved database and it seems to be image and movie file specific. I had different type of files in the container fields and it seems to prefix them with this “moviewin:/” I had a reference there, and now there is movie player with a reference. I did not want the movie player even with the movies (because I launch them to my player). Is there another prescribed way to update a moved databases container references? Is there a manual way to move each one? Can this be handled via XML? Thanks

Avery 8293

This number is not listed in the options and I have been trying to customize. It has 1.5 inch circles 4 across and 5 down. I have managed to get it done with one exception. The header is way to big and I cannot find a way to decrease it. I would use it to print labels on top of prescription cases to make it easier to pick one out of a bag of around ten. At 90 years we have to take advantage of anything that comes along.

Dropdown readout?

Does anyone have or know about techniques for making a dropdown display the current record you are on or things like a parent record. I have a way I am doing it but I wonder if it is the best way. The way I am accomplishing it is; I just take a field with the deduced result that I want it to display a put it on top of the field that I have set to a self-join. This self-join than has a relationship set up limiting it to the members I want to show up based on the context. What I ultimately want is a set of dropdowns across the top of my solution that show the trail or breadcrumb, and when each one is clicked I can go to that record. The top dropdowns will update accordingly. I have seen a way to make this really nice using FileMaker 13 with the visibility option so that when there is not any more trail only one dropdown will show. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Popover Lab

I followed instruction in this FileMaker document, but can’t seem to get the Popover to open with the “Go to Object” Script step. All it seems to do is highlight it. So then I put a field in the Popover and gave it an Object Name and it works. I don’t know if this can be a problem but it now highlights the field. I did not want this, I just want of show what is in my Popover and close after. Can anybody shed so light or tell how opening the Popover can be done. Thanks

Recursive Custom Function

In my solution that is based on this type of relationship (pic) I have a custom function called Infobase(). What it does is let me deduce the parent of a particular Primary Key. I use it to do things like link Information Topics back to found sets.

So I am imagining that I keep feeding the result of Infobase() back into itself that I can come up with the parent of all parents in a particular topic. I was looking into to recursion in Custom Function and saw some info that said a Custom Function cannot iterate but it can recursively call itself. Assuming that is true I would think that this can be done with my function Infobase(). Eventually the “empty” of the result could insure we are at the highest parent. In my attempt to create a recursive Custom Function I must be doing something wrong?

Keep users in found set?

This is the relationship I have. It really works well I can have unlimited Topics for a piece of Information. Meaning Subtopic for Topics and so on. I have created a couple scripts that can deduce what I am calling the family. What I mean by family is all the members under the Information, every Topic and its Subtopics no matter how deep. So now with this list, could it become something I could receive benefit from storing in another table? My intuition says definitely, but I just want to be sure this is the way to go. I really would like to have a way to keep users in “subject-matter” only the Information and its Topics and Subtopic. Is there a way to keep users locked in a found set only or is this done via Interface design.

Specific Tracking and What Power!

Does anybody know if there are ways to store a Primary Key and a Layout to track the back and forth navigation in your database. I would then want to attach a button to navigate back and forth. Now that I figured out that silly flashing error that I was dealing with, http://grasplearning.com/filemaker-forum/32-freez-window-flash--pop I am fully enjoying the power of Finds via Scripting that make it look like nothing else happened but the production of your desired result. Tell me are there things to know about strain on the system or memory if you do a lot of these? Or can I just do as much of this that make sense (of course within the scope of best practice)?

Mandatory Values

I have started to understand auto enter and validation field options.

I want to ensure that a field isn't empty AND contains an approved value.

For instance:

  • The field should not be empty (“”, NULL, FALSE, 0, or Empty).
  • The field should contain either the value "Cat" or "Dog".

What are some of the best ways to accomplish this? Should I use value lists or a calculation to validate the field? What about using a script? What is the best sentinel?

The state field must contain a two letter state abbreviation.

A Global does the trick

I have been watching some training on FileMaker, and currently the instructor is showing how to build a system that navigates the Layouts in a solution. In the early stage of it, we have only added the back button.

An interesting thing has come up, and I figured I am better off trying to fully understand what is going on rather than just be satisfied I can get it working in my solution.

For the back button we built one Script that get attached to the Layout via a Trigger (it stores a variable that is list of Layout numbers) and one that gets attached to the button (It retrieve the Layout we want to return to and removes it from list).

The instructor then explained why it wouldn't work (seems like it should). He says that the other scripts firing on the Layout will clash with it so it cannot do its job. He goes on to show a procedure that fixes the problem. I present it in the pictures, I think what is going on here is it is he is creating a clause that will say “no matter what, create a situation for this to run” but that is just what I see.

What does this $$Nav global variable (pic) do for you that makes it work (it does work)?

Freeze Window, Flash & Pop

I have been able to get results in most of my Scripts using the Freeze Window step. The only ones that don’t seem to work is the one that go to Enter Find Mode or Perform Find. I have read some information warning that certain other Steps in a script will cancel it out. Does Enter Find Mode or Perform Find cancel out the Freeze Window Script Step? A question I would like to know if it can be answered that simply, is can you have the process that uses Enter Find Mode or Perform Find in a script not make the screen flash or redraw with the Freeze Window Step or some other procedure?

Looping though a list of values

I am looking for an example script that loops through a list of values?? I had found the FileMaker article here: http://help.filemaker.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2403

I was advised to avoid using the copy and paste script steps. Instead, I should capture the data into a script variable and set the result back to a field via the Set Field script step.

The article shows a way to use a loop to run through the records in a portal, and send the useful data to another field.

While it works, it seems to be inefficient. It's the only script in my solution that displays an hour glass while running.

If the list of values were in a field, how could I loop through them?

I have already determined that I'll need to use the ValueCount function instead of the Count function. I was staring at the screen for 15 minutes wondering why the Count function always returned 1.

I attached an image of the data I am working with.

Also is it possible to produce a found set out of the List? I see now after testing some more that the portal has a way to refer to a "Related Record" it can get there. I guess the way I imagined it could be further automated is missing something (probably cause of lack of knowledge ) the something being a way to get to each record in the appropriate layout and do something. In my case I just want to check a condition (via a checkbox) and if true add them to a join table.

Criteria Validation

We have a need for a user to click on a checkbox for purpose of deeming something Complete. It is an important decision in our solution because once deemed Complete it will set up other options we need to do. We want to be sure this is the correct decision. I would like know about any methods of making an important decisions trigger have to be released with a safety. I was imagining a Script that displays a message that kind of gives a checklist or some things to consider before deeming something Complete. I guess a Script could take a user to a layout and give them just that. a checklist that once all criteria is met (checked) it could continue the Script and allow for the Complete choice to be chosen and If not, it will not allow it. I was thinking there may be other ways so I am inquiring.

Left on all list items?

I see that when you use Left(return separated list; 10) it gives you 10 of a count of every character in the list. So if you had 10 list items all 20 characters long in the list you just get back 10 characters of the 1st one only. How can you use Left with a list and make it shorten every Item in the list?

Format a date when not in layout mode?

Does FileMaker have a function that can format a date the way you would like? The one in the Inspector is like what I am talking about. Or do you have to write one yourself?

I have a date in one of my calculations that leaves off leading zeros on days and months I want:

9/2/2013 to be 09/02/2013

Are there any documents by FileMaker that show functions and formatting like dd = 09 YYYY = 2013?
